Language Resource Specialist

Job Description:

Pay begins at $8.00 per hour

LRSs work between 5-10 hours per week.

Weekly study-group meetings led by each LRS begin in the fourth or fifth week of the semester and are scheduled at the convenience of the LRS and LxC participants in a given language in a given course. In these study group meetings, for which LRSs are fully compensated, LRSs assist students in understanding the assigned foreign-language materials and relating them to the course content. Discussion is conducted exclusively in English or, if student listening skills allow, partly in the foreign language. LRSs also provide evaluation of the individual performance on each assignment. LRSs participate (and are compensated for the time they spend) in training programs (including a mandatory zero-credit LxC seminar) that provide guidance and assistance in identifying and utilizing LxC materials.

LRS APPLICATIONS

Program Description:

LxC provides opportunities for students to make use of (and enhance) their comprehension skills in languages other than English in courses outside of the language departments. Students in an LxC-supported course perform LxC assignments as substitutes for departments. Students in an LxC-supported course perform LxC assignments as substitutes for ten to twenty percent of the course assignments that would otherwise have been done in English. Because students can be expected to deal effectively with foreign language materials of only intermediate difficulty and moderate length, selected non-English materials are drawn primarily from newspapers, magazines, and other non-technical sources. Library personnel and LxC staff assist Language Resource Specialists (LRSs) in obtaining and preparing appropriate materials. All expenses for locating materials and preparing assignments are reimbursed by the LxC program.
