Study Group Description:

LxC is a program designed to enhance and reinforce your existing language skills in a language other than English, while at the same time giving you the opportunity to learn about the course content through other language resources. In this group we will consider the bilingual experience, stereotypes, racism, and how language is used to represent particular people. Throughout the semester I will ask you to bring in your own experiences with these issues. Class exercises and discussions will give you the opportunity to see how this is done in Latino works in the U.S. and as well as in Latin American media including music and film.

Requirements/ Requisitos

LxC study groups meet for one hour each week for ten weeks. Most of the work for this study group will be carried out in the way of short in-class assignments. For that reason it is especially important to come to class. Occasionally I will ask you to complete short out of class assignments. LxC for ANTH 114 is worth 20% of your grade and replaces Exercise 1 & 2 that you would otherwise be presenting in your sections. In its place I will design in class assignments that carry on the spirit of the exercises but that we will work on as a group. The evaluation in this class will be based on attendance, preparation, and participation as well as two of your in-class assignments. Remember, order to receive a notation on your transcript you MUST ATTEND 8 LxC study group meetings. I encourage all of you to speak mostly in Spanish, though Spanglish is welcome as well. Remember, it only gets better if you use it.

Make Up Assignments

Students with excused absences had the option of making up their class by attending an event on campus with a socio-political or cultural theme. Students were then expected to write a summary of their experience.
