Languages and Cultures Across the Curriculum (LACxC)
      A Post-9/11 Imperative

      October 23, 2004
Hosted by Binghamton University, Binghamton, NY

Rationale and Invitation

The failure of our educational system to produce multilingual and intercultural competence has inhibited our nation's international effectiveness. Stunning opportunities and staggering challenges abound in a "global village" that is increasingly interdependent and multi-cultural. The heightened concern for international communication and expertise after 9/11 magnifies the need for colleges and universities to expand the diversity and intensity of international learning experiences. Such an imperative necessitates reorganizing the study and use of languages, as well as refurbishing both the content and methods used in internationalizing the university.

The State University of New York, and its highly internationalized Binghamton University campus, invite you join in a conversation highlighting innovative efforts to integrate culture and language throughout the university curriculum. We will explore strategies to make international content and information available to students and teachers in stimulating new ways. We will explore fresh approaches to transform teaching structures into more cost-effective and higher-quality learning environments. We’ll learn about strategies for translating interest and commitment into meaningful programs. This conference will provide models for scholarship and action, as well as opportunities for critical discussion about the most effective methods.

Who Should Attend?

This conference is designed for campus administrators, faculty members, study abroad professionals and students interested in exploring the use of language and culture as a tool for internationalizing the curriculum across all disciplines. Personnel from elementary and secondary schools will find useful information that can be adapted to their unique situations.

We will:

  • Bring global content to students in new ways
  • Learn about new scholarship and action models
  • Transform your teaching and your classroom practices
  • Produce internationally competent graduates
