Practical Advice for Language Resource Specialists GETTING CLEAR ABOUT HOW LxC WORKS IN A SPECIFIC COURSE 1. LRSs need to ensure that students have a clear understanding of exactly what LxC participation will require of them. They will need to communicate the following details to all participants: < how the LxC assignments will relate to the non-LxC course material and the syllabus < how student participants will share their LxC-derived subject-matter knowledge with others in the class (participation in discussion, special presentation in lecture) < what role attendance at LxC meetings and performance of LxC assignments will have in calculation of the final grade < what role the LRS will play in assigning grades, monitoring attendance, writing examinations, or evaluating student papers < how and when students can change their mind about participating NOTE: Please consult your copy of Designing and Implementing supplied by the course instructor. LRSs with any concerns regarding these issues, or regarding their own role in the course, should speak with LxC staff and/or seek clarification from the course instructor. 2. Consultation is a must! < LRSs should consult with the course instructor concerning the possibility of attending meetings the instructors may have with TAs. < When a course has more than one LRS, LRSs should meet periodically with each other to share ideas about what materials to use for assignments and how to construct and implement LxC assignments. < LRSs should also invite the course instructor to attend one or more of their LxC study-group meetings, if possible. 3. LRSs should, whenever appropriate, attend the lecture and/or the discussion sections in which LxC participants are enrolled. |
